JOSÉ CARRERAS His meteoric musical career resulted in early debuts at the world's most prestigious opera theatres and festivals, including the Teatro alla Scala of Milan, the New York Metropolitan Opera House, the Vienna Staatsoper, London Royal Opera House and many more.
José Carreras has collaborated with the most renowned conductors, among others Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Leonard Bernstein and Zubin Metha.
His repertoire includes over sixty operas. His wide concert repertoire includes over 600 titles of the most diverse styles ranging from the baroque to contemporary music.
His extensive discography includes over 150 recordings, notably 50 complete operas, oratories, popular and classical recitals. He has been awarded many Gold and Platinum Discs worldwide.
José Carreras has performed the leading role in several operatic films for Television, Cinema and Video.
As for his cinema activities, two films stand out: Romanza Final, in which José Carreras portrays the life of Julián Gayarre and A Life Story, a report on Mr. Carreras life and artistic career. A Life Story, nominated in Hollywood, was awarded an Int. Emmy Award in 1993 by the Academy of Arts and Sciences of the US Television.
Among the numerous national and international prizes and distinctions which have been bestowed upon José Carreras, there are a Grammy Award; the Sir Lawrence Olivier Award, etc.
In 1992 José Carreras was engaged as Musical Director of the memorable Olympic Games held in Barcelona.
The 3 Tenors concerts with his colleagues Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti are now legendary. Followed by world-wide audiences of over two billion, they have created an unprecedented impact in the world of opera. With Placido Domingo and the Norwegian star Sissel Mr. Carreras participated 2002 in Moscow in a legendary Christmas Concert.
To mark the 30th anniversary of his stage debut at the Vienna State Opera he returned in February 2004 to the famous opera house. The Austrian Mail honoured this remarkable evening with a "José Carreras" stamp.
In the season 2008 Mr.Carreras continues memorable concerts around the globe, especially in Japan, Korea, China, the United Arab Emirates, Latin America, Russia, Germany, Austria, Italy, England, Greece, Spain, Scandinavia, etc. Since 1988, in addition to his professional activities, he presides with total dedication and enthusiasm over the "José Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation".
